A late-night overboard alert aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAnova turned into a dramatic rescue in the Baltic Sea when crew members and passengers worked together to save an 18-year-old guest. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 16, 2025, while the ship was en route to Copenhagen on a weeklong Scandinavian voyage.

Alarm Raised at 2 A.M.
The “man overboard” signal sounded just after 2:00 a.m., waking thousands of guests as the 183,858-gross-ton vessel abruptly stopped and turned in challenging conditions. Wind speeds were recorded at force six — roughly 30 mph — as the search began.
The AIDAnova, capable of carrying up to 6,600 passengers and crew, was midway through her itinerary from Kiel, Germany, with calls scheduled in Skagen, Copenhagen, and Aarhus.
Passengers Asked to Help Search
In an unusual step, the captain called on guests in balcony cabins to assist in locating the missing passenger. Many shined their phone flashlights toward the dark waters while crew members deployed lifeboats and searchlights.
The combined efforts paid off — the young man was spotted and brought back on board alive and responsive. He received immediate medical care from the ship’s medical team.

Intoxication Confirmed by Police
Danish police later confirmed the rescued passenger had been heavily intoxicated after drinking with friends. According to reports, he had joked earlier in the evening about jumping into the sea before acting on the comment.
No injuries were reported, and AIDA Cruises has not disclosed any disciplinary measures or further consequences for the guest’s actions.
Full Muster and Delayed Night
After the rescue, the captain ordered all passengers to assemble at their muster stations for a headcount to ensure no one else was missing. The all-clear was given around 4:00 a.m., allowing AIDAnova to resume her voyage toward Copenhagen.
For many guests, the remainder of the night was understandably sleepless, but the mood shifted back to normal operations by morning.
About AIDAnova
Launched in 2018, AIDAnova was the first cruise ship powered entirely by liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a major step forward in eco-friendly cruising. She offers 16 passenger decks, multiple dining venues, a large theater, water slides, and an expansive spa complex.
Her standard 7-night Scandinavia sailings from Kiel are popular with both German and international guests, combining cultural city visits with coastal scenery.

Other Recent Overboard Incidents
While overboard cases are rare, they do happen — sometimes with tragic outcomes.
- Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas saw a fatal incident on July 25, 2025, when a crew member jumped after an altercation near the Bahamas. Despite being retrieved from the water, the individual did not survive.
- Disney Dream experienced a tense rescue on June 29, 2025, when a 5-year-old girl accidentally fell overboard. Her father jumped in to save her, and both were rescued unharmed.
These incidents highlight the importance of passenger awareness, responsible behavior, and the rapid emergency response capabilities onboard modern cruise ships.
Takeaway
The quick thinking of AIDAnova’s crew — combined with help from passengers — prevented a potentially fatal outcome in the Baltic Sea. While the incident ended safely, it serves as a reminder of the dangers of risky behavior at sea, especially when alcohol is involved.
With summer cruise season in full swing, lines continue to emphasize passenger safety protocols, from muster drills to man overboard detection systems. For guests, staying alert and avoiding reckless actions remains the best way to ensure a vacation stays memorable for the right reasons.
